Formula 1’s 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix Race Review
Verstappen Dominates the Season Opener
The anticipation was high for the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix and the beginning of the Formula 1 season at the Bahrain International Circuit under the night sky. Red Bull and Max Verstappen wholly owned the 2023 season and are the clear favorites to run the table yet again to claim their 4th straight driver’s and third straight constructor’s championship. Ferrari, Mercedes, Aston Martin, and Mclaren will have to fight for every millisecond in hopes of catching Red Bull and possibly challenging the mighty Dutch driver. The Bahrain Grand Prix welcomed Formula 1 fans with open arms, which is how the race unfolded.

Qualifying
To no one surprise, Verstappen took the first pole position of the season, making him the clear favorite to win the 2024 Bahrain GP. Up to Q3, including the practice sessions, Red Bull did not post impressive times, but when it was time to flex their muscles, they showed they were the team to beat. Ferrari and Charles Leclerc grabbed P2, followed by Mercedes’ George Russel in P3. Rounding out the two front rows was Carlos Sainz Jt in 4th place for Ferrari. Anything can happen on race day, and everyone knows the drivers behind Max would need a monster start if they had any hope of challenging him for the remainder of the race.
2024 Bahrain Grand Prix Race Day
The 20th Anniversary of the Bahrain Grand Prix began with the sun setting, giving way to the clear starry sky over Sakhir. In the 2024 season, he started with the red lights going off and Verstappen taking off cleanly and quickly, creating a sufficient gap to hold off a pressing Leclerc in the first corner. Verstappen never had to look back after this point, fast cruising to his 55th career victory. On the other hand, Leclerc had to deal with braking issues, leading to multiple lockups heading into nearly every turn.
Leclerc began to slide down the ranks as his teammate Sainz, who was voted driver of the day, climbed up, passing his rivals with poise and speed, claiming third place and the final podium spot. Sainz is sending a message that his last season in Ferrari will not see him backing down. Sainz battled his teammate for position on the track, making it clear team orders were not in play. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, who qualified in 5th place, showed off his car’s superior speed, taking second place and giving his team their first 1-2 finish of the season. Despite his struggles, Leclerc managed to claim 4th place, followed by Russel and Mercedes in 5th. Mclaren claimed their first season points with Lando Norris in 5th and Oscar Piastri in 8th. The “old men” of Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton, grabbed 7th place, and fan favorite Fernando Alonso and his Aston Martin in 9th. Aston Martin wasn’t done and grabbed the final point when Lance Stroll crossed the finish line in 10th.
Max Verstappen won the race with a comfortable 20-second cushion, leading to his first grand slam of the season. He claimed pole position, led every alp of the races, had the fastest lap, and won the race handily. It was his second victory in Bahrain and sent the message that he is still the champ for a reason. In a week, Formula 1 heads to the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, where the narrow street circuit is no stranger to red flags and drama.
