Komatsu’s first steps into Formula 1 came through engineering roles at British American Racing (BAR) and Renault. At Renault, he was part of the race engineering team during the Fernando Alonso-led championship years in 2005 and 2006. His experience in a title-winning environment helped shape his approach to vehicle performance optimization.
His next significant move came in 2012 when he joined Lotus F1 Team as a race engineer. Working closely with drivers such as Romain Grosjean, Komatsu developed a reputation for his analytical mindset and ability to extract maximum performance from the car. His tenure at Lotus coincided with some of the team’s most competitive seasons in the hybrid era, despite financial difficulties.
Rise Within Haas F1 Team
In 2016, Komatsu became part of Haas F1 Team’s inaugural season, initially serving as Chief Race Engineer. His role was pivotal in establishing the team’s technical operations, helping Haas achieve competitive midfield performances in its early years. Over time, he took on greater responsibilities, being promoted to Director of Engineering in 2018, where he played a crucial role in the team’s car development and race strategies.
Komatsu’s ability to bridge the gap between engineering and on-track execution made him a key figure within Haas. Despite the team’s struggles in the lower half of the grid in recent seasons, his leadership in engineering remained a cornerstone of their operations.
Appointment as Haas Team Principal
In November 2023, Komatsu was appointed Team Principal of Haas, following the departure of Guenther Steiner. His promotion marked a significant shift in Haas’ philosophy, moving away from a more managerial-led structure to a more technical and data-driven leadership approach.
His immediate focus in the 2024 season was improving Haas’ race-day performances and tire management—two of the team’s long-standing weaknesses. Under his leadership, Haas adopted a more strategic approach to race execution, emphasizing consistency and long-term development rather than short-term gains.

As Haas prepares for the 2025 season, Komatsu faces several key challenges:
- Maximizing the team’s limited budget: Unlike top teams with substantial financial backing, Haas operates with fewer resources, making efficient development crucial.
- Enhancing car performance and tire management: One of Haas’ biggest struggles has been race-day tire wear, something Komatsu aims to rectify with a more adaptive approach.
- Driver lineup stability: The 2025 season features an evolving driver landscape, and Komatsu will play a pivotal role in ensuring Haas has the right lineup to remain competitive.
- Strengthening Haas’ technical partnerships: The team’s reliance on Ferrari for power units and other components makes collaboration with Maranello essential.
With a pragmatic and analytical leadership style, Komatsu’s role in reshaping Haas’ competitiveness will be closely watched by both fans and rivals.
